The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
